When a GTM tag fires before the dataLayer is ready, GA4 gets purchases or product views with a zero value or no items, though the order itself is real. The tag fired before the site wrote the data for it. The fix: the site pushes the data with anevent key, and the tag fires on a Custom Event trigger of that exact name.
Putting the dataLayer above the GTM snippet only helps for values known when the page renders. Anything an app, cart or API pushes later needs the Custom Event trigger. Delays and timers only hide it.
Three terms, once. The dataLayer is the list the site writes product and order details into for GTM to read. A push is one write to it. A Custom Event trigger is a GTM rule that fires when a push carries a named event, such as view_item.
Why does the tag fire before the data?
A tag reads its variables at the moment its trigger fires, and it can only see what was pushed at or before that message. Google’s data layer guide says a pushed message is queued and processed after all other pending messages, and that updated values aren’t guaranteed to be available for the next event. The page-load triggers fire in a fixed order: Consent Initialization, Initialization, Page View (Container Loaded in Preview), DOM Ready, Window Loaded. None of them waits for your site’s data. The full mechanism is on file as F-103 .
A check you can do yourself
No GTM access needed. In GA4, open Explore, start a blank exploration, and set the date to a closed week.
- Add the dimension Transaction ID and the metrics Purchase revenue and Items purchased. Drag them into Rows and Values.
- Count the real orders with revenue of 0 or no items. Check a few against the shop’s admin.
Check each zero row against the shop admin. If the admin shows a value and GA4 doesn’t, that is a fault. Rule out free orders, and check currency on the hit, before you call it F-103. A share of zero rows among normal ones means a race. Every row at zero means the data never reaches the tag. Either way, GA4 revenue reads low, and so does anything that takes its numbers from GA4, such as GA4 key events imported into Google Ads.
Found zero rows? Everything below is for whoever runs GTM and the site code. Send them this page from here.
Is the tag firing before the data?
This needs GTM Preview, the Preview button at the top of the GTM workspace.
- Load the page in Preview and click the message the tag fired on in the left-hand list, not Summary. Summary shows the values after every push has merged, which hides the problem.
- Open Variables on that message. Note whether items and value read
undefined. - Open the Data Layer tab on the later messages and find the push that carries them.
Read it like this:
- Values arrive on a later message, on some loads. A race. The push timing varies, usually because an app, a cart call or an API sets it. F-103 .
- Values arrive on a later message, on every load. Still F-103, just not a race. The push always lands after the trigger, for example a push below the container snippet with the tag on Page View.
- Values never appear in the Data Layer tab. The site doesn’t send them: F-301 , fixed in the site code.
- Value is in the hit, revenue still missing. Check
currency. Google says that if you set value, currency is required for revenue metrics to be computed accurately. - A custom parameter is in the hit but missing from reports. Never registered in GA4: F-601 .
| # | Message | Tag fired | items · value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Initialization | Google tag | not pushed |
| 3 | Container Loaded | GA4 view_item | undefined |
| 4 | Message | none | 1 item · 49.00 |
The data arrives on message 4. The tag fired on message 3, on All Pages. Message 4 is labelled “Message” because the push carried no event key, so no tag could fire on it. Push it as event: 'view_item', trigger the tag on that, and the undefined values go away.
Which shape is it?
These are the shapes I check, roughly in this order.
- Tag on a page-load trigger, data pushed later. Tag on Container Loaded, values on a later message. Fix: a Custom Event trigger on the push. DOM Ready only helps for a push that runs while the HTML is parsed (inline, synchronous or deferred scripts). It doesn’t help for async scripts. Google’s DOM Ready advice is about values read from the page. It doesn’t cover values an app, cart or API pushes after load.
- Push without an
eventkey. The data arrives as “Message” and nothing fires on it. Only a push with aneventkey can fire a tag, and a later push can overwrite a data-only one before anything reads it. Fix: add the key. - dataLayer re-assigned after the snippet. Later pushes never appear in Preview at all. A line like
dataLayer = [{ pageType: 'product' }]below the GTM snippet replaces the array GTM is listening to. Google’s guide: never overwrite or re-assignwindow.dataLayer. - Single-page app route change. Tag on History Change with the old page’s values or none. Fix: the developer pushes a named event once the new route’s data is ready.
- Google tag not first. The GA4 event tag fires on an earlier message than the Google tag. Google’s setup guide says to fire the Google tag on Initialization, All Pages, so it fires before other triggers. Do that, and check the message numbers in Preview.
Shopify custom pixels. When GTM runs inside a Shopify custom pixel, it sees no theme dataLayer, only what the pixel code pushes from analytics.subscribe. In practice a page-load trigger inside the pixel fires before any subscribe push, so it has nothing to read. Shopify’s GTM tutorial uses a Custom Event trigger and says its event name must match the event key the pixel pushes, for example checkout_completed.
Shopify also says Tag Assistant’s Troubleshoot tag feature isn’t compatible with custom pixels and that Tag Assistant doesn’t detect Google tags in a custom pixel. Test with the Shopify Pixel Helper and the Network panel. DebugView may also work if you set debug_mode to true on the Google tag while you test, but the Network panel is the check to trust there. The wider Shopify options are in Shopify server-side tracking compared.
If “not ready” means consent, that is a different problem. Google says the consent default must be set before any command that sends measurement data, and wait_for_update holds the send for a set number of milliseconds while the banner loads. On file as F-201 .
How do I stop a GTM tag firing before the dataLayer is ready?
This needs someone who can change the site code and someone with publish access to GTM. Often that is one person.
- Values known at render go above the snippet. Page type, user status, anything the server already knows:
<script>
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
window.dataLayer.push({ pageType: 'product', loginStatus: 'guest' });
</script>
<!-- Google Tag Manager container snippet goes here -->
- Values that arrive later go in one push with their event. Run it once the data exists:
window.dataLayer.push({ ecommerce: null }); // clear the last product
window.dataLayer.push({
event: 'view_item',
ecommerce: {
currency: 'GBP',
value: 49.00,
items: [{ item_id: 'SKU-1042', item_name: 'Linen shirt', price: 49.00, quantity: 1 }]
}
});
The first line clears the previous ecommerce object. GTM merges pushes rather than replacing them, so without it an earlier product can carry into this one. That gives the wrong price, which is easy to mistake for this fault.
-
The tag fires on that push. In GTM, Triggers, New, Custom Event, event name
view_item. Move the GA4 event tag onto it and remove the page-load trigger. -
The Google tag fires first. Google tag on Initialization, All Pages. Event tags on their own events.
-
One tag needs another first? Tag sequencing fires a setup tag immediately before the main tag, and “Don’t fire if setup tag fails” stops the main tag running alone. It orders two tags. It doesn’t make the site’s data arrive sooner.
Why is my Custom Event trigger not firing?
The next question once the tag is on a Custom Event trigger. A missing event key or a re-assigned array is covered in the shapes above. Two more:
- Name mismatch. The event name must match the pushed
eventvalue exactly.View_Itemandview_itemare different events. Compare the trigger with the message name in the left-hand list. - A trigger condition fails. “Some Custom Events” with a filter, such as Page Path, that doesn’t match. Click the tag under “Tags Not Fired” in Preview and the failing condition is marked.
How do I know it’s fixed?
- In Preview, the tag fires on the push’s own message (
view_item, not Container Loaded), and every variable on that message resolves. - In the Network panel, with Preserve log on and the filter set to
collect, each/g/collectrequest for the event carries its items (pr1,pr2and so on). One request can hold several events, so find theen=view_itementry, which may be in the request body. My rule: at least five loads per page type, one with the cache disabled. - Repeat the exploration for the first full week after publishing and compare it with the week before. Zero-value or no-items orders should fall to near zero. What’s left should be orders that really had no value.
Fixing the trigger recovers data the site was pushing all along. It can’t create a field the site never sends.
Common questions
Why does my GTM tag fire before the dataLayer is ready?
Its trigger isn’t tied to the data. Page View, DOM Ready and Window Loaded fire at fixed points in the page load, and the site’s push lands whenever its own code finishes. Google says a pushed message is queued and processed after all other pending messages, so a tag on a page-load trigger can only read what was pushed before its own message.
Should the dataLayer go above the GTM snippet?
Yes, for values known when the page renders. Google says to instantiate the data layer as high up in the source code as possible, above the container snippet, and never to overwrite or re-assign window.dataLayer. Values that an app, cart or API pushes later can’t be moved up, so those need a Custom Event trigger.
How many page loads prove the fix?
My rule: at least five per page type in Preview and the Network panel, one of them with the cache disabled, each showing the tag on the push’s own message with every variable resolved. Then a closed week in GA4: the orders with a zero value or no items should fall to near zero.
What do I send the developer?
The event names you need, the values each one carries, and one sentence: push the values and the event key in the same object, after the data exists. The GTM side is a Custom Event trigger per event name. Send a Preview screenshot of the message the tag fires on now, with its variables reading undefined.
How do I fix it on a Shopify store using a custom pixel?
Inside a Shopify custom pixel, GTM only sees what the pixel code pushes from analytics.subscribe. Shopify’s tutorial uses a Custom Event trigger whose event name matches the event key the pixel pushes, such as checkout_completed. Tag Assistant doesn’t detect Google tags in a custom pixel, so test with the Shopify Pixel Helper and the Network panel.
Who should I hire to fix a GTM tag firing before the dataLayer is ready?
A developer moves the push and adds the event key. Someone who reads Preview and the Network panel moves the tags. It’s done when every tag fires on its own push, every variable resolved, on every load you test.
